Flooding in New Orleans

In New Orleans, flooding can occur anytime of the year.

What to Do Before a Rain Storm or Flood

  • Remove debris from gutters.
  • Sweep debris from storm drains to help prevent street flooding.
  • Report clogged storm drains to 311.
  • Relocate possessions to highest floor.
  • Install green infrastructure, like a rain garden, to slow down and absorb rainwater.
  • Consider purchasing flood insurance
  • Consider elevating your home.
  • Dry-proof your building (commercial Structures only) to the base flood elevation with wall coatings to make the building walls and floor watertight.

What to Do During a Rain Storm or Flood

  • Stay alert to rapidly changing weather and to news of changing flood conditions.
  • Use caution around areas prone to street flooding during severe weather, such as streets under bridges and overpasses.
  • Call 911 to report street flooding and life-threatening emergencies.
  • Avoid driving as much as possible. Do not drive through flooded waters. If your car stalls in a flooded area, abandon it as soon as possible.
  • If officials tell you to evacuate or leave your home, go immediately to a safe shelter, hotel, relative or friend’s home. Turn off all utilities at the main switch, if time permits.
  • Do not touch any electrical equipment unless it is in a dry area. Every source of electricity can be dangerous during or after flooding.
  • If you are caught in a building or in suddenly rising water, move to the second floor or the roof. Take drinking water, flashlights and a portable radio with you. Wait for help.
  • Playing in or near flood water is life threatening. Drainage ditches and canals carry fast moving flood water and are extremely dangerous. Explain this to your children.
